Repipe or Repair? How to Tell When One Pipe Fix Is Not Enough
Repair one failure. Repipe a failing system. One pinhole in a copper line is a repair. A third pinhole in two years is the pipe telling you the whole run is done. The two things that settle it are how old the house is and how many separate runs have already gone, not how bad the last leak looked.
Pipe repair is the job we get called for most, even though the business is named for water heaters. Here is how we decide which one you actually need.
Should you repipe or repair?
Pipe repair is targeted. We cut out the damaged run, fit new material, pressure test it, and close up. It is the right answer far more often than repipe marketing suggests.
A repipe replaces the supply piping through the house. It is the right answer when repairs have stopped working.
The honest line between them is repeat failures. Count them:
- One leak, first time. Repair. A single failure is a single failure.
- A second leak in a different room. Watch it closely. Now the question is whether the two share an age and a material.
- A third leak in two years. That is a system, not an accident. Patching it is renting time.
If someone has already patched your pipes before you called, that counts too. You are not on your first failure.
What does pipe work cost in 2026?

Read that first row carefully. It blends small targeted repairs with much larger jobs, which is why the range is so wide and why the average is low. It is not a whole-house price. Anyone who quotes you a whole house from a national average has not looked at your house.

What are the signs a house needs repiping?
Four, and any of them on an older house is worth a real look.
Water pressure that dropped and never came back. Old galvanized steel narrows from the inside. Once it starts, it does not recover.
Rusty or metallic tasting water at the cold tap. The cold side matters. Rust on the hot side alone usually points at the tank.
Pinholes in more than one room. One room is a run. Two rooms is a system.
Pipes somebody already patched. Every patch is a data point about the pipe beside it.
If the water is showing up somewhere that makes no sense, that is a job for proper leak detection before anyone cuts drywall. Guessing is expensive, and drywall is not where you want to find out.
Does the age of your house decide it?
More than anything else, and this service area splits almost in half on it.
The failure drivers here are age, water chemistry and how the original installer routed things. Weather is not one of them. Old galvanized steel narrows from the inside. Copper thins at bends and where it meets a different metal. Cheap 1990s plastic fittings get brittle. All three are on our map at the same time, in different cities.
On the 1960s and 1970s streets in Concord, CA, the median home was built in 1970 and 74.7 percent of the city's 46,948 units predate 1980. Concord built 10,941 homes in the 1960s and 11,627 in the 1970s, so 47.9 percent of the whole city went up in those twenty years. Those figures come from the Census Bureau. Half a city of the same age, on the same materials, reaches the same point at the same time. A repipe conversation there is normal.
Pleasant Hill reads the same way. The median home was built in 1970, 61.9 percent of its 14,320 units predate 1980, and its biggest single decade is the 1950s. Only 8.4 percent of the city was built in 2000 or later, so nearly every job there is a retrofit into existing walls.
Now the other half. In Oakley only 15.8 percent of the housing predates 1980, and just 1.2 percent dates from the 1960s. In Brentwood the pre-1980 share is 10.9 percent. The piping behind those walls is still young.
So here is the part that costs us work and is still true: if you live in Oakley or Brentwood and the house is from the 1990s or 2000s, a repipe is probably the wrong job. Low pressure there is much more likely a valve, an aerator, a regulator, or the water heater. Selling you a repipe would be selling you the wrong thing.
Our water is Delta water, treated at the Bollman plant in Concord and at the Randall-Bold plant in Oakley. Those minerals matter for fixtures and for anything that holds hot water. They are not what decides a supply repipe. Age and metal are.
Copper or PEX, and why the answer is about walls
Both are code legal in California and both outlast the decision. The InterNACHI life expectancy chart that home inspectors use puts copper water lines at 70 years and PEX at 40. Either one will outlive the reason you are replacing the pipe.
So the real question is not which pipe lasts longer. It is how much wall has to come open to install it.
Copper is rigid and proven, and it takes more labor. PEX flexes, so it can often be pulled through with fewer wall openings. Fewer openings means less patching, and patching is a real line on the bill.
Routing decides most of it. A slab run, a crawl space run and an attic run are three different jobs in the same house. We tell you which material fits your house and your budget instead of pushing one on every job, and we say up front who patches and paints so there is no argument at the end.
Can a repipe be done in stages?
Often, yes. If the budget will not take the whole house at once, we start with the runs that are failing and the ones feeding the fixtures you use most.
It is not as clean as doing it in one pass, and it costs a little more overall. It still beats paying for the same emergency three more times.
However it is done, the house keeps water at night, everything gets pressure tested and inspected, and the openings get patched at the end. New pipe also stirs up sediment, so the water heater gets drained and flushed. If the tank is already near the end of its life, we would rather be handling the tank in the same visit than opening the same walls twice.
Get a straight answer before you commit
A repipe is the biggest residential plumbing job there is, so it deserves a real diagnosis and not a sales pitch. Count your failures. Check the age of the house. Then get someone to test pressure at more than one fixture.

What causes pinhole leaks in copper pipe?
Copper thins from the inside over time, and it thins fastest at bends and anywhere it meets a different metal. Water speed through a tight elbow wears the wall. A brass or steel fitting on a copper line sets up a slow reaction between the two metals. The result is a pinhole, and the pipe around it is usually the same age and the same thickness.
Will a repipe fix low water pressure?
It will if the cause is old galvanized steel narrowing from the inside, which never recovers. It will not if the cause is a partly closed shutoff, a clogged aerator, a failing pressure regulator or the supply into the house. That is why we test pressure at several fixtures before anyone quotes a repipe. Pressure alone is not a diagnosis.
What happens to the water heater during pipe work?
New pipe stirs up loose sediment, so we drain and flush the tank rather than push that debris through a new system. If the heater is already near the end of its life, it is worth handling in the same visit. Opening the same walls twice costs more than doing both jobs while the walls are already open.
